Ditch the Robot, Get Real: How to Actually Connect on Social Media

Digital Marketing, SEO, Social Media Marketing, Web Design
We’ve all seen those accounts. You know, the ones that post perfect, polished images with captions that sound like they were written by a robot. Yawn. Nobody wants that. People want people. They want to see the real you, the messy you, the “oops, I spilled coffee on my shirt” you.
So, how do you ditch the robot and get real? Let’s break it down:
1: Talk Like You’re Talking to a Friend (Not a Press Release):
Think about how you talk to your best friend. You’re probably not using fancy jargon or trying to sound super professional. You’re just being yourself. Do that on social media! Use everyday language, throw in some emojis, and let your personality shine.
Example: Instead of “We are pleased to announce the launch of our new product,” try “Guess what?! We just launched something super cool, and we can’t wait for you to try it!”
2: Tell Stories, Not Just Product Specs:
Nobody cares about a list of features. They want to know how your product or service will make their lives better. Tell them a story! Share a customer’s success story, talk about the inspiration behind your latest creation, or even just share a funny anecdote from your day.
Example: Instead of “Our widget has a 10-inch screen,” try “Remember that time you were trying to watch a movie on your tiny phone screen? Yeah, our widget fixes that. Here’s how…”
3: Ask Questions and Actually Listen to the Answers:
Social media is a two-way street. Don’t just broadcast your message; start a conversation! Ask your followers questions, run polls, and encourage them to share their thoughts. And when they do respond, actually listen to what they have to say.
Example: “What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to [your industry]? Let us know in the comments!”
4:Show the Human Side of Your Brand:
People connect with people, not logos. Show them the faces behind your brand. Share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your team, introduce your employees, and let your followers see the human side of your business.
Example: Share a photo of your team’s Friday pizza party or a video of your CEO’s dog interrupting a Zoom meeting
5:Use Humor (When Appropriate):
A little bit of humor can go a long way in making your social media posts more engaging. Share a funny meme, tell a witty joke, or just make light of a relatable situation. But remember to keep it appropriate for your audience and brand.
Example: A relatable meme about Monday mornings for a coffee shop.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Real (Even the Messy Parts):
Perfection is boring. People connect with authenticity. Don’t be afraid to show the messy parts of your business, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the lessons you’ve learned.
Example: A post about a product launch that didn’t go as planned, and how you learned from it.
7. Engage, Engage, Engage!
This is the most important part! Respond to comments, answer questions, and join the conversation. Social media is about building relationships, so don’t be afraid to get personal.
Example: Respond to every comment, even if it’s just a simple “Thanks for sharing!”
The Bottom Line:
Social media isn’t rocket science. It’s about being human, being real, and connecting with your audience on a personal level. So, ditch the robot, grab a cup of coffee, and start having some fun!
This is a useful post for finding broken links within the website, what about links pointing outwards that are broken? I can use a free web service but wondered if this was possible.
Great tool! I am using a redirect plugin to send all my 404’s to my home page but I think it’s slacking sometimes. I noticed that some other sites have taken over my 404’s somehow.
